WHAT “RIVER PROFICIENCY” MEANS
You should emerge from the course with a confident understanding of how rivers work and how to paddle safely and enjoyably with the right equipment and techniques. All of the following come into the course:
- Safety principles for all types of paddlers
- Trip Planning and Organisation, along with equipment and costings
- Rescue and emergency handling
- Environmental care, camping and waste management
- Interpretative trail guiding, to impart knowledge about the place
- Knowing the game, how to read rivers, how to maintain control on river, how to recognise hazards, how to avoid deadly situations.
- Knowing about river trails in South Africa and abroad, where to find information, popular options and how to get in touch with fellow river users locally and abroad.
- Legal river guiding qualifications. All about what you need to qualify.

The course is likely to be exhausting but it is also a lot of fun and involves close co-operation and teamwork. For beginners it is an eye-opener. We do teach swimming and we do allow extra time to learn and practice essential skills.
